With each passing year, more and more vintage mote With each passing year, more and more vintage motels and signs along Route 66 meet the wrecking ball. One of our most favorite signs on the entire route is the Sun ‘n Sand Motel in Santa Rosa, NM. The motel has been closed for sometime and sadly suffered multiple fires in the past few years and is finally slated for demolition. As for the sign, we haven’t seen what lies ahead but hope (and hope and hope) that someone saves it. #signsunday #route66 #vintagesign #abandonedplaces #tinsheets

Ninety six years ago today, on April 30, 1926, the Ninety six years ago today, on April 30, 1926, the Mother Road received its official numerical designation of 66. Originally planned to be Route 60, it was changed after objections by the then governor of Kentucky. As the original US Highway system was being established (odd numbers running north-south, even numbers running east-west, low numbers to the south and west, high numbers to the north and east) those highways ending in zeros and fives or that were a single digit were thought be more prestigious. Upon learning that Route 60 would be running along the path of what became 66 and not through his state, the governor of Kentucky adamantly voiced his displeasure and ultimately got Route 60. Though Route 62 was proposed, Cyrus Avery, the “Father of Route 66”, decided that 66 was catchier and the states that lost out on 60 would be pleased with the new option. As it turns out, Route 66 was indeed not only a suitable replacement, but ultimately became the most famous road in American history. #getyourkicks #route66 #motherroad #visitarizona #tinsheets
A tiny town with just one paved road, Yampa, CO, w A tiny town with just one paved road, Yampa, CO, which lies between Steamboat Springs and Vail, is home to Crossan’s M&A Market. The heart of town for decades, it opened in 1903 in anticipation of the coming railroad and was the community general store until its closure in 1964. After its closure it sat empty, a true time capsule with 1960s merchandise still on shelves and a 1964 calendar hanging on the wall, and was in danger of being demolished until 2013 when it was saved and later rehabilitated through the Colorado Preservation program for endangered places. Owned by the town of Yampa since 2006, it was rededicated in 2018 and is now used as the Town Hall and a visitor’s center and museum. #roadsideamerica #twolanetravel #colorfulcolorado #tinsheets
