Sitting at the base of Raton Pass on the New Mexic Sitting at the base of Raton Pass on the New Mexico side, the Raton Pass Motor Inn is a blast from the past. As lovers of old roadside motels, we took a special trip to Raton for a night just to stay here. Originally opened in 1956 as the Capri Motel, the motel has had numerous owners over the years and (like many) roadside motels fell into a state of disrepair before being redone in 2016. Full of kitsch and quirk, one of our favorite parts of our stay was the pack of Round Up Candy Cigarettes and the old school key fob. The Capri Motel Cafe sign that still hangs over the main office wasn’t visible in an old postcard but is most likely from the 1950s. #signsunday #vintagesign #newmexicotrue #tinsheets

Built in phases starting in the 1930s, the Coronad Built in phases starting in the 1930s, the Coronado Motel in Pueblo, CO has an important place in roadside motel history. From the mid-30s to the mid-60s, a publication called the Green Book was published, listing lodging, restaurants, and attractions that welcomed African American travelers. Located along Lake Ave, which at one time was the route of US Highway 85/87, the primary north-south route between Canada and Mexico (and the predecessor of today’s I-25), the Coronado Model was just the second motel in Colorado listed in the 1957 edition and one of only three listed by 1967. Later in its history, the Coronado Motel made an appearance in National Lampoon’s Vacation, as the motel when the Griswolds realize that the luggage with their credit cards had been stolen. The motel maintains a roadside motor court vibe and appears to still be open with decent reviews. #roadsideamerica #asseeninmovies #nationallampoonsvacation #coloradolive #tinsheets
